About

Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology, LLC was established in 2004 by Dr. Fred Hoerr to address a need for histopathology services for commercial poultry not met by academic and government laboratories.  The histopathology support for commercial poultry was well received by US producers and allied industries, and an international clientele soon developed.  A laboratory acquisition in North Carolina in 2023 enabled expanded investigations of poultry health issues. Today, privately-owned VDP is an emerging presence in the  domestic and international network of diagnostic laboratories serving commercial poultry production.

Dr. Fred Hoerr. Founder and Pathologist, learned about chickens while gathering eggs on his uncle’s farm in Indiana. He also admired a local veterinarian who ran a private diagnostic lab for poultry and swine. These early-life experiences helped to shape a veterinary career in poultry diagnostic investigation and research. After three decades in government and university labs, he shifted to private pathology practice to support domestic and international poultry production through Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology, LLC.

Dr. Dallas Clontz

Dr. Dallas Clontz, Laboratory Director, visited broiler breeder flocks with her father, a breeder manager. She learned to pack eggs, walk the houses and carefully observe the chickens, inspect equipment, and collect the mortality. Within a few years she was researching probiotics to inhibit Salmonella in poultry feed and the relationship of biofilm formation to virulence expression of Enterococcus infections in chickens.  These formative experiences helped to shape her education and establish a career in poultry diagnostic investigation and research.
